25th Anniversary of the DSP Laboratory

DSP Laboratory has been established 25 years ago in the academic year 1992/93, in a room of the building “R” at BME-MIT. (The abbreviation stands for the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Dept. of Measurement and Information Systems.) At the beginning the Lab had only a few PCs and DSP boards. Further DSP boards and important instruments have been donated by the Josef Heim KG. Other equipment, furniture, etc. have been provided by the department, so the label “DSP Laboratory” has been set on the door in the spring of 1993. In 2001 the Lab, as well as the department moved to the new building “I” of the university. Since that time the Lab is on the 3rd floor of wing E, as it is well-known for younger colleagues.

The jubilee was celebrated in a familiar, rather than official way. There were no official speeches, laudations, scientific presentations. We had a keyword: class reunion. It was an irregular class reunion, as not only classmates, but all the students and instructors ever studied or taught have met this afternoon. (Many of them had both roles.)

The class reunion was held on the 29th of June 2018 with 30-35 participants. Some colleagues could not take part on the celebration at the department, but joined us after the official part in a brasserie.

The program of the celebration was very simple: some “volunteers”, former or present members of the Lab told a few sentences about themselves, about their carrier, and how they remember their time spent in the Lab. It was really interesting, how the former students see the Lab and its role after more than 20, or after only a few years.

There was no order of the talks, but in the first minutes we remembered Ferenc Nagy, our former colleague at the department, who was the main organizer and founder of the Lab. We have also remembered Josef Heim, whose donation started the Lab.

We have prepared a presentation that collects pictures and figures related to the Lab or the work of Lab members. These pictures also help to call back the time spent in the Lab, the moments of work or leisure times.

The presentation can be downloaded from here.

We have also made photos at the celebration, they can be downloaded from here:

We present a few of them here:

Tamás Dabóczi, head of the Dept. opens the celebration.

László Naszádos remembers the first decade. He is one of the founders and has been one of the lab leaders until 2003.

András Görgényi had been member of the Dept. for 30 years when the Lab. was established. However, by the development of embedded measurement systems he also joined the DSP Laboratory.

The audience listens to the talk of József Németh, a former colleague who has made his MSc thesis in the Lab.

Something to eat by the help of the László Schnell Foundation.

There is no jubilee celebration without a birthday cake...
